How supervision works

You keep doing the BAS work for your own clients. Riley directs, oversees and checks it, and every hour goes on the record.

Four steps to applying

The TPB asks for a Cert IV, a Board-approved GST/BAS course and relevant experience. You bring the first two; Road2BAS supervises the third.

  1. 1
    Week one

    Plan your route

We go through your qualifications, current clients and any relevant experience you already have, then write a development plan around your gaps and goals.

  2. 2
    Every week

    Work under supervision

You do the BAS work. Riley reviews all your BAS-related workings before lodgement and meets with you to go through feedback.

  3. 3
    Ongoing

    Log the hours

Your supervised hours are recorded as you go, so there's no scramble to reconstruct them when it's time to apply.

  4. 4
    1,000 or 1,400 hours

    Apply to the TPB

You apply with an experience statement from your supervising agent. The Board makes the decision; we make sure your evidence is in order.

What a normal week looks like

Supervision under the Tax Agent Services Act means a registered agent directs, oversees and checks the BAS services you provide. You don't need to be an employee for that to happen. In practice, with Road2BAS:

  • You prepare the work for your clients as usual: reconciliations, GST coding, PAYG withholding, the activity statement itself.
  • Riley reviews it before it's lodged. Anything that needs fixing comes back with an explanation, not just a correction.
  • You catch up each week, in person, by phone or by video. Basic plans get 30 minutes, Advanced an hour, and Premium books catch-ups when needed.
  • The hours are logged against your development plan, building the record your experience statement relies on.

Monthly training

Every plan includes monthly BAS training sessions covering the topics that come up most in review, plus email support between catch-ups (phone support on Advanced and Premium).

Bringing clients

Road2BAS supervises the work you do for your own clients, so you'll need some to join. Riley no longer takes on clients directly, and when new enquiries do come in they're passed to Road2BAS bookkeepers. That happens now and then, but it isn't something we can promise.

The end of the road

When you reach 1,000 hours (with voting membership of a recognised association) or 1,400 hours, you apply to the Tax Practitioners Board with your experience statement. Registration is the Board's decision. Our job is to make sure the experience is real, supervised and documented.
